Celebrating Pisa Luminaria on the 16th of June"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An important event in Pisa is the festivities of Saint Ranieri and the beautiful <strong>Luminaria<\/strong>, a magic event that takes place on the evening of June 16.<\/p>\n<h3>WHO WAS SAINT RANIERI?<\/h3>\n<p>Saint Ranieri was born in 1118 and died on the 17th of June\u00a01160. He was the son of a famous merchant. His life was really hard due to the work of his father. He had a lot of money at his disposal and at the age of 19 years old he met a hermit, called Alberto. An event that deeply changed his life.<\/p>\n<p>Ranieri decided to abandon all his possessions and became a peregrine. He reached the Holy Land and stayed there for some years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/terrasanta.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5360\" src=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/terrasanta.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/terrasanta.png 295w, https:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/terrasanta-182x125.png 182w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1154 he came back to Pisa and retired in the Saint Vito Monastery, where he died. A sign to the inhabitants of Pisa to strengthen their body and soul.<\/p>\n<p>In 1688 the sarcophagus containing the remains of S. Then, lightened at night creating a unique atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/luminara1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5362\" src=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/luminara1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/luminara1.png 295w, https:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/luminara1-182x125.png 182w, https:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/luminara1-78x55.png 78w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even the monuments in the Miracle Square are decorated with lights and candles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/torrepisaluminara.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5363\" src=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/torrepisaluminara.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thousands of volunteers start working one week\u00a0in advance to place the candles everywhere around town.<\/p>\n<p>For the occasion, music shows, craft and food stands are set all around the city. The music is on until late and the day after everybody sleeps until late. It&#8217;s also one of the finest architectural complexes in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/piazzamiracoli.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5370\" src=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/piazzamiracoli.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The square has 4 religious buildings: the Cathedral, the Baptistry, the Monumental Cemetery and the famous Leaning Tower. It is one of the few Italian Cathedral Squares surrounded by grass lawns instead of paved ground. Becoming one of the nicest green areas in town.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Pisa_-_veduta_aerea-300x192.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5371\" src=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Pisa_-_veduta_aerea-300x192-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students love to go there and have lunch or study during breaks. It is a relaxing and peaceful spot in the city and one of the favourite places of citizen and tourists.\u00a0In 1987, the whole square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pratino.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5372\" src=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pratino.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Leaning Tower of Pisa is perhaps the most famous of the monuments. It is the bell tower\u00a0of the cathedral\u00a0of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt.<\/p>\n<p>The tower leans at an angle of 4\u00a0degree. This means that the top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9 metres from the centre!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/torrepisa.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5373\" src=\"http:\/\/cookwithgusto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/torrepisa.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tower&#8217;s tilt began during construction due to an inadequate foundation on ground that was too soft to support the weight. The tilt increased during all the years that passed before the structure was completed. The construction halted for almost a century because the Republic of Pisa was continually engaged in battles with Genoa, Lucca, and Florence.
